‘Mesh’

San Francisco, 2008

‘Mesh’ was created as a personal challenge: how could I cover the largest area with just two people in just two hours? I immediately considered the minimum amount of raking needed to include an area in the artwork. I had done smaller versions of this design in which This may still be the largest piece I have done.

This design came during the first evolution of my beach art. Geometric design was my entry into large-scale artwork. After a few years it was feeling static and predestined. During this time I had been studying fractals and patterns in nature. And then finally I had the insight to do what nature does to achieve the glorious patterns we see in the natural world- engage a process. In the case of this design the process is creating meandering lines that intersect, creating an undulating, watery feel. A very simple process can create a high degree of seeming complexity. One of the highest compliments I received during these years of ‘organic’ art was being asked if the pattern had already been there at the beach naturally.
